Have you ever been shopping and found a piece that you loved and thought, “I could make that?” Do it yourself fashion is an easy way to save money on new clothes ruffle shorts by changing an old shirt, pair of jeans, or even an old piece of fabric into a chic new outfit.
The hottest way to wear tie dye is through tie-dyed denim. Tie-dyed shorts are in all of your favorite stores. You will learn how to make your own pair of tie dye shorts in this easy to follow lesson.
What you’ll need:
- If you don’t have white shorts, you can bleach them until they’re white.
- I used dyes from the friendship bracelet kit, but you can also buy tie-dye kits.
- Tulip brand is around $4 a package.
- Bottles for dye
- Trash Bag
1 It will keep the dye from making a mess and make it easier to clean up. If you have shorts, wash them. The instructions are on the box.
The shorts should be soaked in water and soda ash. When you wash them, this will keep them from fading. Take the shorts out of the mixture and wring the excess water out. Prepare your dyes according to the directions while you wait.
Put the shorts in the trash bag. The center front and center back of the shorts should match up.
Begin dyeing If you want to use your first color, squirt it onto wherever you want. Add the next color after you have finished. You can do it randomly, or you can do it in rainbow order and wear rainbow shorts. The dye doesn’t turn brown if you mix too much.
Take your shorts off. The dye should have bled through, so just add it where you need it. If you use the same colors in the same areas, they won’t mix together.
Adding water to spots that have too much dye can help spread the dye. Rub the dye with your hands to spread the colors.
Make sure you reach all the hard to reach spots. Check the crotch shots, around the button, pockets, and belt loops, to make sure you get the dye you want.
Take the dye for 6 hours. You can put your shorts on the plastic bags in the bathtub or other area where they won’t be a problem. The colors will not fade or wash out if they are let to soak. Once you rinse them, the colors will intensify.
Use cold water to wash your shorts. When you wring them out, the water is mostly clear.
Put them in the laundry. If you want to dye your shorts, put them in the washer and let them run. Don’t worry about the washer being stained or the colors coming out, neither of these will happen. If you follow the directions, most of the color will stay. You should dry them as you would normally do.
Extra Tips for Tie-Dyeing Success:
- Gloves the entire time. When you’re done, you don’t want multicolored hands.
- For the same reason, wear clothes you don’t like.
- If you need to change your gloves, you should have extra gloves ready.
- When touching your shorts, be aware of the dye on your gloves.
- You should have a cup of water ready to use.
- If you spill the dye, clean it up.
The process is very easy and the results are worth it. You could try this with your clothes.
